Urbandub: Where’s Lalay?

Thursday, May 17, 2012

When Urbandub played Lucena City last May 11, 2012 for the Tanduay First Five Tour, many people wondered why Lalay wasn’t onstage with them.  Instead, Rico Blanco’s bassist Dave Delfin and John Dinopol played bass.

After the concert, a message was placed on the Facebook Fan Page of Urbandub, asking fans to pray for Lalay’s quick recovery.

Ed Kowalcyzk / Vertical Horizon Live in Manila Photos

Thursday, May 17, 2012

In 2011, Ovation Productions was already talking to Ed Kowalczyk about doing a concert in Manila.  I’m not sure exactly what happened which caused the concert to have been postponed, not only once, but twice.  What I do know is that he finally came on April 28, 2012 and did a back-to-back co-headline show with Vertical Horizon

I couldn’t make it to the concert but i heard pretty cool things about it.  One thing that caught my attention was that someone said that more people came for Vertical Horizon than for Live’s Ed Kowalcyzk.  It got me thinking, what if Ed came alone?  How many people would’ve been there?

Anyway, here are some of the pictures that Atthewomb.com had taken from that night.

Pupil and Domino Sign with MCA Universal

I’ve been in touch with MCA Music now for a couple of years and they never fail to invite me to numerous events.  Many of these events are concert related, or press conferences.  However, once in awhile, they invite me to contract signings with some of the talents they sign.

Today MCA Music signed Pupil.  I was instantly pleased and was happy to hear, that though Sony had closed down, MCA would continue the support of a major label, for a band like Pupil

Hanging with Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus have been in my sights since they first came out of the dark and into the spotlight a couple of years ago.  I was given a copy of their EP and loved it.  It was dark, it was theatrical, they spoke of zombies, and their music video of Haunted Wonderland had a coffin in it.  This stuff was right up my alley and I could completely relate to the visuals they were putting on to match the music.

They then released Horror Scene in 2009 and went on to releasing another music video as well as winning the Favorite New Indie Artist at the 2011 Myx Music Awards

In 2011, they became part of the Jack Daniels JD Set Philippines where they are now part of the final 7 competing to represent the country in the coming JD Set Asia Pacific International event this 2012/2013.

Turbo Goth Short Circuit Mirage MTV

We recently featured a new video in which The Butchercons partied quite heavily through a Friday night in the song MRT, but we didn’t expect to be featuring yet another new video so soon.  However, when Turbo Goth released this brand new video, we just couldn’t help ourselves and had to give it the praise and acknowledgement we believe it’s earned.

A year ago, when Turbo Goth entered Wombworks Studios to film for Alive at the Womb and record Short Circuit Mirage, I had no idea that one day, they would release a video of the same song with such intensity and simplicity.

The Tanduay T5 opening video interview with all the bands

Friday, May 11, 2012

Sucks!  I’m missing the Lucena leg of the Tanduay First Five Rock Royalty tour tonight.  But I don’t feel entire awful because I’m missing it for a very good reason.  However, nevertheless, I do feel like I’m going to be missing out on something very special, for the Tanduay Rock Royalty First Five tour is definitely something to behold.

Anyway, because I’m missing it, I decided to somehow try to make myself feel like a part of me will still be there, and with that I decided to share a video with all of you.

This is a video that is shown at each of the concerts of the tour.  The way it works, is that before each of the First Five bands, there is a video presentation that is basically an interview with each of the 5 bands, each of them talking about being on tour with Tanduay.

Urbandub for Vans.

In November of 2004, I was invited by MCA Music to come and witness one of the final stages of the recording of Urbandub’s The Apparition.  It was their 5th album and my first time to enter the studio to experience the magic that Urbandub creates while within those walls.

It is now May of 2012 and I’ve learned that I will once again be a fly on the wall while watching and listening to Urbandub record their next album.

Fairly recently we wrote about how Taken By Cars performed at this years South By Southwest Festival in Austin Texas and how it was an amazing feat for a local band to have been invited to perform at such a prestigious international event.

Now, we would like to give acknowledgement to Typecast and Greyhoundz as they are about to embark on an American Tour spanning 4 cities in 2 great states on the west coast of America.

Urbandub At The Womb: Tanduay T5 Tacloban

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Waking up in Calbayog on May 5, 2012 was easy.  There was no morning flight to catch, and check out at the hotel was scheduled at 12PM.  We were able to take a shower, get dressed, and even hang out at the hotel lobby and have breakfast while waiting for the entourage of Urbandub to get there.

We were told the land trip to Tacloban would take around 4-5 hours.  At 1PM we got into the vans and began our road trip.  Nothing much to say about the journey, we stopped only to use the bathroom and to smoke a cigarette.  As we entered Leyte, we crossed the San Juanico bridge, which to me is the most beautiful bridge I’ve seen all my life.  There, we ran into some of the guys of Parokya Ni Edgar.

Urbandub At The Womb: Tanduay T5 Calbayog

Monday, May 07, 2012

Oh dear sweet Calbayog, where do I begin?

First of all, I’m really sorry, but I didn’t even know where Calbayog was.  When I learned that it was in Samar, all I could think of was that when we were in Boracay also for the Tanduay T5 tour, I got to hang out with some bartender girls from Samar.  Didn’t even know if it was north, south, east or west.

What I do know about Calbayog now though is very different.  These guys are the best and really know how to party!  I know we said that Bataan was the best so far, and I don’t want to compare anymore as it doesn’t really matter, but Calbayog was fucking awesome!

The Reunion: An Eraserheads Tribute Album

Photo taken from here.

The Eraserheads are undoubtedly one of the most influential Filipino bands in the local music scene.

They are covered by countless bands, have numerous t-shirt designs paying tribute to the legacy they left behind, and continue to be named the artist with the best local music video of all time, the band continues to make their presence felt, even though they disbanded many years ago.

Not to mention, their reunion concert, both of them, probably had the most attendees of any single Filipino bands concert.

The noise they are making now is in the tribute album being recorded by some of the top artists of Star Records and Star Cinema.

On the road with Urbandub: T5 Bulacan and PULP Summerslam

Thursday, May 03, 2012

Bataan might have been great fun, but that isn’t to say that traveling to Bulacan the following day didn’t have its share of excitement and adventure!  For Urbandub, there was plenty of action to make for an interesting day.

For one thing, Franco was booked to play the afternoon slot of the PULP Summerslam, which meant that Gabby and Janjan had to leave early to make that gig, and then come back to play Tanduay’s T5 show in Bulacan, only to head back to the Amoranto Stadium to play Slam for Urbandub.

Read on to know more about Urbandub’s April 28, 2012!

Urbandub At The Womb: Tanduay T5 Bataan

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

With the Tanduay First Five Tour now on it’s 5th and 6th legs, together with Urbandub, we got in the van and made our way to our hotel for our night in Bataan.  It was a hot Friday afternoon and though well on our way, we had no idea that going to Bataan would prove to be the best night of the tour, so far.

PULP Magazine Correction

Monday, April 30, 2012

I recently had the privilege of being featured in the January 2012 issue of PULP Magazine.  Having been contacted by Fifah of PULP, i was thrilled to be included in an upcoming issue and looked forward to it.

When i learned that the issue was out, i looked around for it but it was either sold out or had been pulled off the shelves, now being past January.

To make the long story short, i finally got my hands on it and now understand why so many people were confused about me and what i do.

In the feature entitled the Top 10 artists from the 80s and 90s who had awesome album cover art, it states that I am the bassist of the Blue Jean Junkies as well as the band manager of Up Dharma Down.

It also describes www.atthewomb.com as a site that features local and international rock bands, as well as events, gigs, and major concerts.

APRIL 20, 2012. Family, friends, colleagues and fans came together on the eve of the late Karl Roy’s “40th day” to celebrate his life once more at the famous biker bar, Handlebar in Makati. The tribute show, PUTING ILAW (a title of Karl’s song, Advent Call days) was organized by ‘The Doctor’ Ramon Zialcita and F.E.A.R. Productions (the outfit who supported Karl’s latest gig tour throughout RP) and featured bands and musicians who were lucky to have worked and jammed with Karl as well as those who grew up with his music and words. The music that night was moving salute to Karl Roy of Advent Call, P.O.T., Kapatid and ‘Karl Roy’, whose decades of music formed part of the soundtrack of those who were in attendance.

Sergio Mendes played in Manila for a one night only concert with his band, Brasil 66.  Though I was looking forward to this concert, I was as well a bit hesitant as I didn’t know if he was going to play his boring love songs, or if he was going to treat the Filipino audience with his samba songs.

Once I got there, I sorted out getting all the tickets that Atthewomb.com was going to distribute to our ticket winners from the contest that we held.  When I had all the tickets with me, I hung out at Padi’s Point and sent a message to all the winners to meet me there.  While waiting, together with Atthewomb.com photographer JC, we had a couple of beers each and prepared for a night of good music.

The ticket winners showed up soon after and it was my honor to have met everyone and been able to congratulate them personally.  Atthewomb.com really has the best fans.  Everyone was so friendly and one kind lady even gave me some goodies that she had brought from Batangas.

Blitzkrieg Punk!

All photos by Juan Miguel Bernal.

I’m older than a lot of the kids in the music industry today.  I have different views on music and my vocabulary for music genres is very poor compared to how I hear people describing their music to others.

When I was growing up, genres were very basic.  There was jazz, classical, rnb, heavy metal, punk, and rock.

Watching Marky Ramone with Michale Graves, Crazy Joe and Graham Vanderveen perform at the Hard Rock Café reminded me a little bit of my childhood and growing up completely immersed in music.  It was just my kind of punk, straightforward!  Punk to me is Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Sex Pistols, and of course The Ramones.

Jaqc Yu and Greyhoundz

Monday, April 23, 2012

Sex and rock n roll have always gone hand in hand with each other.  Loads of rock stars have dated hot models, actresses, porn stars and whatnot; while tons of musicians continue dating hot chicks.

Some people consider this unfair but I think, so what?  Good for them!  If banging a super hot chick helps them get their rocks off and acts as their muse for writing great songs, than more power to them.

Here we have Greyhoundz.  These guys have been tearing up the scene for over 12 years now and have a fantastic history of achievements, as well as concerts and other groundbreaking performances.

Check out the band as hot model Jaqc Yu struts her stuff in front of them, as if trying to get them to stop playing with their instruments so that they can play with her instead.

Check out this band.  They’re called The Draybers and they want to be featured on the Ellen De Generes Show.  By the name alone I wouldn’t give them a second thought, but after watching this video, I realize it’s not so bad.

They seem to be kind of funny, they like The Beatles, that singer can sing, and I love it that the band sings back up vocals too.

Check out their video below.

I distinctly remember that morning when I stayed up waiting for the announcement. I whispered “Please, please, baby come back”, as I waited for their tweets. And then, there it was.

The Maine… Live in Manila… First leg of the Pioneer World Tour… March 31, 2012. YES!

“Hey, are you going to The Maine’s concert?” a friend asked. “Yes. I’ll be the loner, crying in the bronze section.”“Ok. Here’s the thing, Mitch. Do you want to attend their press conference?”... Double YES!

Excuse the cheesiness but I couldn’t help but sing, “Can’t stop, won’t stop. I must be dreaming.”

Gary V: On Higher Ground’ at Music Museum

GARY V opens the summer season with a series of 8 concerts at the Music Museum, marking his 29th anniversary in the industry and the 25th year of his company Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management, Inc. Stricken by Type 1 juvenile diabetes for 30 years now, this unmatched performer has been a shining beacon of inspiration in the country and he remains complication-free and still, on top of his game. Gary has consistently inspired his millions of fans through his craft as a singer, musician, songwriter, video producer, dancer, actor, musical arranger and a multi-awarded television host/performer for 9 years on the undisputed top-rating musical variety show, “ASAP.”

After visiting typhoon victims in Cagayan De Oro and Iligan for UNICEF, Gary V jumpstarted the year with a new segment on “ASAP 2012” entitled “With Love: Gary V” – a spin-off of his platinum CD under Star Records and his much-talked about television special which aired seven times on ABS-CBN and MYX in 2011 and twice on The Filipino Channel. The segment features Gary as he showcases stories of love, forgiveness, redemption, and faith while he sings songs that celebrate the beauty and goodness of humanity. “With Love Gary Valenciano,” the CD compiles the soap opera and movie theme songs which he performed and recorded for ABS-CBN and Star Cinema. Just this March, Gary, together with the ASAP team, flew to Cagayan De Oro to shoot a video with a courageous flood victim for his segment.  All these efforts let led to “On Higher Ground,” a fundraiser for UNICEF and the Shining Light Foundation, two faithful partners dear to Gary V, who has been National Ambassador for UNICEF for 14 years now.

Where Do You Listen To Music?

Posted by Miggy Matute in At the Womb Exclusive, Social Media
Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Nowadays, it’s so easy to get your hands on a device that can play music.  Every single person I know has a cellphone that can play mp3’s.

When I was growing up, digital music was completely unheard of.  I could only listen to music through my cassette player and compact discs.  Some of my friends had record players and though I’ve always found them really cool, I never owned one.

I listened to most of the music I listened to in my room.  I shared a room with my siblings but whenever they weren’t home, I turned off the TV and played my cassettes.  I spent hours and hours making mixed tapes and sound tripping while creating these awesome playlists.  One summer when I didn’t have an allowance to buy new cassette’s, I spent everyday listening to Pink Floyd’s The Wall, which I had the film of on Betamax.

Malasimbo year 2 and the first thing that came to mind was booking the damn villa I’ve wanted since year 1. In which, I’m still rather wretched about because it was an unsuccessful attempt. Second thing that came to mind was the delicious kesong puti pandesal everyone seems to be obsessed about (thank you, Mr. Schulze), third thing was the absolute rip-roaring good time that awaits us all. I could go on and on really, but it all comes down to Malasimbo being remarkable. It was stimulating and I wanted to experience it all over again.

Repertory Philippines proudly presents its much-awaited musical offering for 2012 with JEKYLL & HYDE - a tale of love, redemption and the seductive power of evil adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, with music by Frank Wildhorn and book and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.

JEKYLL & HYDE is set against the backdrop of Victorian London, with the respectable Dr. Jekyll who has begun to display alarmingly erratic behavior. From the gentle, humane Dr. Jekyll, his evil side emerges in the person of Mr. Hyde when he drinks a secret potion. The plot further becomes complex when a brutal figure haunts the city’s streets, committing assault and murder under the cloak of darkness and dismal London fog.

A legion of fans in Manila who have been called “Jekkies” will definitely enjoy the songs included in the musical like “This Is the Moment,” “Someone Like You,” “A New Life,” “Alive,” “Take Me As I Am,” “Once Upon a Dream,” “In His Eyes” and “Dangerous Game.”

30 Hours with A Day To Remember

Enjoy this exclusive behind the scenes feature we have on A Day To Remember.  I had the honor and horror of hanging out with the band while they were in town.  Check out this step-by-step account on what happened during the bands Manila visit, put together by Sonic Boom and Built By Sonic.

While browsing through The Philippine Star this morning, I stumbled across an article that caught my attention.  It was about Anne Curtis that stated that not only is she about to embark on a nationwide tour for Annebisyosa, but that she’s also going on a world tour.

Normally, this would please me to high heavens for I am a fan of Filipino’s travelling outside of Manila to share their talent with the people that they would reach, but in this case, I was a bit disappointed.

An Interview with Kjwan

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

I had the privilege of being able to interview Kjwan last week.  With a new album about to be launched together with a brand new video, I was thrilled at the opportunity of being able to ask them a few questions.  Though the interview was only with Marc and Kelley, their answers definitely satisfied my curiousity about what they’ve been up to.

We at the womb, hope you enjoy this exclusive interview as much as you enjoyed our most recent interview with Nathan Azarcon.

Special thanks to the guys of Kjwan not only for giving me some of their time to answer my questions, but also for supplying me with a teaser of their new album entitled, Kjwan IV, as well as for these photos.  Thanks guys!

A lucky bunch of A Day To Remember fans were able to get to meet the band before they went onstage last Friday night.  Some of them had their shirts signed, others had their posters signed, while others even got their signatures signed on their skin which they said they would turn into permanent tattoos!

Atthewomb.com Editor In Chief was there to photograph the photo op with the band!  Check out their whacky display of affection to their fans through the photos below.

A Day To Remember: Fuck The Police
(true stories from A Day To Remember’s experience in the Philippines)

At The Airport:

Last March 18, 2012, I was asked to pick up A Day To Remember from the airport.  As part of the task, it was my responsibility to pick them up and take them to their hotel.  They flew in from Bangkok on Philippine Airlines flight PR731 at 6:20PM and though the flight wasn’t delayed, it still took over 3 hours to get out of the airport.  Why, because of the police.

I spotted them about to exit the airport terminal and waited for them to come out of the gates.  Suddenly, I noticed that they were being led away from the line and all of their faces had a look of concern on them.  I managed to get their attention from beyond the gates and with that, their tour manager came out to speak to me.  We introduced ourselves to each other and then he explained to me what had gone wrong.

Memories with Karl Roy

Photo taken from Rogue Presents Karl Roy.

People die. It’s a part of life.  In fact, it’s the only thing that’s really certain in life, isn’t it?  I for one, at least for the most part, fucking hate death.  I’ve had to deal with so many deaths, be it loved ones, friends, pets, and sometimes, even idols.

Karl Roy passed away today.  I don’t know how old he was, although he must be a few years older than me.  And though I feel he’s cheated death a number of times, I still hate it that it got him this time.

I first met Karl in 1992 or 1993, at Weekend’s Live at the Atrium Building in Makati.  This was the period when Razorback and Wolfgang were dominating the stage on a mostly weekly basis, but every so often, Karl’s Advent Call would play.  I was underage but was working as the bar tender and Karl and I became friends.  We talked a lot about different kinds of music, he once gave me something to calm me, I hooked him up with something someone gave me, and being neighbors in New Manila, we got to hanging out quite a few times.  I remember once talking about a song and remember so clearly how he told me that he has respect for anyone that knows the words to the song A Whiter Shade Of Pale.  I immediately got a copy of it and with my cassette player, played and paused the song as I wrote down the lyrics on a piece of pad paper.  Another time, i was dating this hot chick who just moved to the Philippines from Jakarta and made the mistake of taking her to see Karl sing, needless to say, after a few minutes of watching Karl she was in love with him and i lost all my chances of making it with her.

14 Again with Death Cab For Cutie

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

By: Andrea Regine Reyes

I was 14 years old when I fell in love with Death Cab for Cutie. I had my dad, who lives in the US, ship me a copy of Transatlanticism, and after a few cycles of listening to the album, I was floored by their sound. That’s why it was absolutely essential for me to make it to their concert; the 14 year old in me could not miss this. 24 year old me, by the way, was in complete agreement. I could not, for whatever reason, pass up to see these guys in person.

The energy that day at the NBC Tent was contagious. Every person there just had this big, silly grin on his or her face. People literally pranced into the venue (I would know, I was one of them), and there was random flailing with complete strangers. Anything there was able to elicit a cheer from the crowd; opening the gates got a cheer. Soundcheck by the sound technicians scored a ‘whoo’. The opening band, Ateneo’s Never The Strangers, got ‘whoo’d’ too (albeit it mixed with a ‘who?’ and a ‘You’re opening for Death Cab, you better be good.’ Thankfully, they were.). We even ‘whoo’d’ at people blocking our view (and cheered when they moved). The place was just alive with electric energy and just could not be stopped.

Then the lights dimmed. And the band came out on stage. And the place came alive like you’d never seen before.

“I think we’re going to have a long and beautiful friendship,” lead singer Ben Gibbard called out to an overly gregarious NBC Tent Crowd Monday night.

It was an apology of sorts – an attempt at amends for not coming to the Philippines sooner. But as soon as indie-rock act Death Cab for Cutie launched into the next barrage of heart-killing, soul-crushing ballads: all was forgiven.

And we’d forgive them again, if we had a chance.

Taken By Cars off to South By Southwest

It is always a big deal, and a massive delight, when Filipinos are recognized on a foreign scale.  Many times over, Filipinos have been featured internationally for various reasons.  Some are in the forms of sports and our athletes such as Paeng Nepomuceno and Manny Pacquiao, others have been Youtube sensations such as Charice Pempengco and Maria Aragon who sang with Lady Gaga, while others are about Filipinos collaborating with international sensations like Mig Ayesa working Rock of Ages and Arnel Pineda becoming the lead singer of Journey

But never has any Filipino been invited to participate in the festivals that are held abroad.  Though there are many, and spanning across practically the entire planet, there is one that is particularly catching our attention as of late.  It is the South By Southwest Festival, which happens annually in Austin, Texas.  The Festival has been running since 1987, had over 10,000 individual reservations booked, showcased 92 stages, and had 45,000 people in attendance (over the 3 days of the festival) just in 2011 alone, has been known for harboring the dreams of the artists and bringing them closer to their dreams of getting noticed and hitting it big.

All their singles released have become certified hits. Their debut single “Picture Picture” not only has become a byword but one of the most requested tracks as well. Same with “Disney”, “Linda Blair” and “PA Roadie Fernandez” which dominated the charts of various radio stations and music channels all over the country.

Wacky group TANYA MARKOVA gives music fans another reason to be happy as they release the expanded edition of their self-titled debut album now titled “Tanya Markova: Shock Pop 2CD Edition”. The first CD contains all their hits and tracks from their debut album while the bonus AVCD includes the music videos of the four singles “Picture, Picture”, “Disney”, “Linda Blair” and “PA Roadie Fernandez”—all visually capturing the cheerfulness of the group.

Last February 19, 2012, Evanescence played a great show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum!  Thousands of Filipino fans flocked over to the concert venue to enjoy a great night of music.

Opening for Evanescence was Bush, who some thought should have been the main act and Evanescence should have opened for them.  I for one though, am not one to argue about this but instead, simply enjoyed the fact that these two great bands are now a part of the line-up of foreign artists that have graced Manila with their presence and awesome concert experience!

The opening of a something new at something old
BY: Aimee Marcos

There is something new brewing in the upper floors of Saguijo.  There is word that there will be not only art, but products from Manila’s forefront, up and coming artists.  The vision is that the Pocket Universe Art collective, as it will be called, will be both a gallery space and art shop.  There will also be an extended service with Snow Tattoo, featuring one half of Turbo Goth and tattoo artist Sarah Gaugler.  The idea behind this space is to be a platform to support up and coming new, young artists.  The shop wants to be able to collaborate with small business owners and other independent entrepreneurs to showcase all the talent that is out there right now.  Parallel to this there is the belief and pride in all the artists and collaborateurs are Filipino, and this can be a vehicle to promote their art, as well as thrive in the Philippine artistic industry.

Death Cab for Cutie Live in Manila: The Anticipation Builds
By: Jon Ocampo

With the huge volume of foreign artists coming to our country, it gets more difficult to put up a show that will both do well in terms of commercial sales and be memorable for those who will watch the show.

One show that’s living up to those standards is Death Cab for Cutie Live in Manila. While ticket sales have reportedly been outstanding, the anticipation of the band’s extremely rabid fan base in Manila has been rising high that it seems that the band won’t be able to do anything wrong come Monday night, March 5, 2012 at the NBC Tent, The Fort, Taguig City. Truly, it’s a tribute to the songwriting genius of Ben Gibbard. All indicators point to Gibbard and co. (Chris Walla, Nick Harmer and Jason McGerr) dishing out a memorable show that every DCFC fan who’ll come this Monday will remember for the rest of their lives, singing along to songs such as “New Year,” “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” and “I Will Possess Your Heart.”

This writer recently had the fortune of being included with a small panel of select writers to interview DCFC drummer Jason McGerr over the phone. Below are a couple of questions (first two of which came from this writer) from that session…

So, on February 23, we finally met up online and did the interview.

Teaser of Sugarfree’s Paalam Pilipinas Documentary

Posted by Miggy Matute in At the Womb Exclusive, Videos, Sugarfree
Wednesday, February 29, 2012

As with all art, there comes a time when an artist must simply say, “it’s done.”  However, this is easier said than done.  Take for example a painter with one of his pieces.  How do you actually know when you’re completely finished and not even one more stroke of the brush is needed to complete the piece?  For musicians at a studio finalizing the album, how can you tell when all the frequencies and volumes are exactly where they need to be?  The task can be daunting and oftentimes you can’t really tell when it’s done and you just have to commit to stopping the work and accepting it for what it is.

As for the editing of Sugarfree’s Paalam Pilipinas Documentary, that’s not quite the case.  Last night I went to our post-production office to check out the editing and to see where it was at, and it’s far from being done.  All the parts were in place but a lot still needs to be completed.  Volume adjustments, cuts, adding a couple of other parts from the other takes, etc.

Four Year Strong Live in Manila!

Monday, February 27, 2012

By:  TJ Cafuir
Photos By:  TJ Cafuir and Michael Del Rosario

I have been listening to Four Year Strong for around 5 years now, ever since songs from the Rise or Die Trying album came out and became the new big thing. Like most, I heard their songs online, through Internet radio and streaming music (remember PureVolume.com?). After being blown away by their massive, dynamic sound, I immediately downloaded their albums and became immersed on what I think is one of the best bands to come out of the loud juvenile mess of a genre that is power pop meets post hardcore stuff. From then on I became a Four Year Strong fan and to this day I still am. And there aren’t many bands from that “phase” that had a lasting impact on me.

My favorite FYS record would be their acclaimed first album, It’s Our Time, which is a monumental record. It’s fast but it’s atmospheric enough to set the emotion. It’s kinda hardcore but has happy feel to it. In a way it is genre-bending, and their style altogether gave them the label “happy hardcore”. Imagine that. I honestly have overplayed that album so much that if you’ll put a microphone near my eardrums, you’ll hear the song One Time Too Many. The second album wasn’t any different. Rise and Die Trying is so good and it launched FYS to greater heights. Also, the band quickly became a must see live act with their crazy antics onstage. When I saw those videos on Youtube guess what I said to myself. Yeah. I hope to see this band at least once in this lifetime.

HIJO DEFINES SLOW ROCK

Life is about moving on. And that was what Nathan Azarcon, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado did when their former band Bamboo ceased being a group. With their passion for music, they decided to form their own group in late January 2011—a band they would eventually call Hijo.

“The name Hijo was suggested by Vic,” Nathan said. “It just stuck like a child.”

Nathan, aside from playing bass now mans the vocals with Ira and Vic still doing the same thing they are good at- guitars and drums respectively. But adding to the band’s members are Radioactive Sago Project’s Junji Lerma on guitars and Wowee Posadas on keyboards.

How I survived the Wall of Death
(A firsthand account on a chaotic evening that is Black Dahlia Murder and Lamb of god)
By: Archi Asis
Photos By: Chippy Rivera (Band Manager of Ennui Breathes Malice, who opened the Lamb of God x The Black Dahlia Murder Concert.

Probably one of the loudest and heaviest foreign metal acts that landed on our shores this year is the Lamb of God x Black Dahlia Murder.  It was one hell of a show last Saturday at the World trade center, Pasay city. Metal dudes and dudettes filled the hall as they ripped their heads and threw their fists in the air on that crazy night. And yes, my dear friends, I was there, I was there in the middle of the madness and chaos.

The moment I heard that Lamb of God would be back in Manila, I was stoked! I was not able to see them at the Pulp Summer Slam X and I mourned for that reason. So I made a vow to myself that I, by all means, will see them perform live, be it even if I have to shed blood or offer a chaste virgin to Dagon. Luckily I didn’t have to do those tasks, atthewomb sent me there! Fist bump, atthewomb!

“If you were there, you’ll see lots of ladies wearing skirts too. SOOO AVRIL! ♥ smile” - Janella

Canadian pop punk princess Avril Lavigne had her second concert, “The Black Star Tour: Avril Lavigne Live in Manila 2012”, in the Philippines last February 16, 2011 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. I have loved Avril Lavigne for years so spending almost everything that I’ve got on my first pay was so worth it! I have really been waiting for that day, and I did not expect that that same day would be more special & memorable. When I was on my way to the Big Dome, I received one of the biggest news in my life. Yes, I passed the Nurse Licensure Examination! I was so surprised, couldn’t contain my happiness, and tears of joy were flowing.

Okay, so let’s talk about the concert proper. I entered the gate at around 8pm and the show was just about to start. Someday Dream was the opening act but I wasn’t able to pay much attention to their performance since I was so overwhelmed by the number of greetings/congratulatory messages I was receiving thru texts and calls.

The Silverlake Music Festival in Pattaya, Thailand was a blast! It was my first ever festival outside Manila! I must say, props to the organizers of Silverlake. The festival was very well-organized! Manila should have something like this too!

Anyways, we didn’t catch the “Coachella vibe” of the festival since we got there around 8:30 pm already because we were only up for Incubus and their set was scheduled at 11pm. But I’m kinda regretting that a bit…oh well!

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Coming (Very) Soon: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Live in Manila!
by Jeanilyn Kwan

When the 2012 line-up of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival came out in October last year, a herd of local indie pop lovers started skipping meals to save up for a memorable trip to Singapore. But, while piggy banks were being broken, Joff Cruz of Kindassault started cooking up a plan to bring in some of the Laneway fever back to Manila for those who couldn’t afford the expense of traveling abroad.

After a successful Toro Y Moi concert last February 15, Kindassault in corporation with Raven 7 and No Seat Affair, are now promising another epic and intimate night with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Scheduled to perform on Wednesday, February 29 at the Hard Rock Café in Glorietta 3, TPOBPAH are four New Yorkers who have perfected the art of playing sweet pop rhythms and sublime nu gaze melodies. If you like the idea of a harmonious ménage à trois of music from the Smashing Pumpkins, Ride and Jesus and Mary Chain, you’ll certainly fall in love with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. As part of Pitchfork’s and NME’s roster of favorites, they are certainly one band for the books.

TORO Y MOI: watching the Bull and Me.
By: Aimee Marcos

I had the pleasure of seeing this act (band is not quite accurate) last February 15th at the Hard Rock Café.  First and foremost, I must say, that setting up the concert at this venue was actually good, there was ample parking, ample space for the audience and the sound system was not that bad.
Back to the concert…

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was not able to attend the Red Horse Muziklaban this year.  It was sort of sad that I couldn’t make it, knowing that it was sure to be a massive event that would be full of fun and surprises and great music, but at least, together with atthewomb.com, we were able to send a photographer over to document the night for us!

Enjoy these photos and relive the experience of the Red Horse Muziklaban!

GREYHOUNDZ: In For The Kill with New Studio Album Recording

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

At Love One Another Studios (a very aptly named recording space for such a tight-knit band) Greyhoundz has been and is continually writing, recording and producing new material. On a supposedly uneventful Wedensday night, a handful of us had dinner with the band composed of Reg Rubio, Nino Avenido, TJ Brillantes and Audie Avenido, and their crew.

We were invited by their manager and fifth man, Bubi Sanchez, to drop in on their songwriting session as a preview to what will be one of the biggest independent movements of 2012.

Malasimbo Festival last year, 2011!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Photos by Fatz Poblador

I had just returned to Manila after 3 months of island living in Boracay. For a beach bunny like me, the (beach) hangover was absolutely ridiculous. I would grab every opportunity I can just to go back to the beach, swim in the ocean, listen to the waves, get a tan, feel the sand between my toes and the marvelous sea breeze. Although, it did seem like lady luck was on my side because a few days after I came back, I was invited to go to the first ever Malasimbo Music and Arts festival in Puerto Galera. I had no idea what it was going to be like but I was set on going. Beach in the daytime, music and arts up in the mountains at night and hotel after parties in the wee hours was good enough reason for me.

Grammy Awards Complete List of Winners 2012

Posted by Miggy Matute in Announcements, News, Various Artists
Tuesday, February 14, 2012

The Grammy Awards have once again come and gone.  Every year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) presents the accolade in order to recognize the music industries achievements, much like the Academy Awards, which is dedicated to film.

This year however, will probably be one of the more memorable years for the Grammy’s!  It isn’t very often that one artist steals most of the awards but Adele, a British national took all the awards in all the categories in which she was nominated for.

I wasn’t able to watch the entire show but I did see the ending of a replay and it was pretty cool!  I got to see the Foo Fighters perform in a white box alongside another white box where in a DJ in a Mickey Mouse hat played some tunes.  The show ended on a really high note as well as Sir Paul McCartney performed “Golden Slumbers” and “Carry That Weight” from the last album of The Beatles, Abbey Road.  Together with Paul McCartney on stage were the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen and some other folks who I didn’t recognize.

Anyway, here’s a list of this years nominees and winners!  Congratulations to everyone who was a part of this show, especially to Adele!

Photo taken from Polly’s Facebook Page.  Thanks Polly!

Here’s something no one was expecting!

The Apo Hiking Society got together to attend a wedding last January 24, 2012 in Tagaytay City.

The couple, Mikel Garcia and Polly Tinio, celebrated their union with friends and family and as part of their first dance, they got the original members of APO to sing Panalangin to them.

It was an amazing moment and everyone stopped to witness the once in a lifetime event.

Thank you for having us at your wedding guys!  Not only was it a beautiful celebration, but witnessing APO perform live and in their original line-up was truly an amazing experience!
